The story is set during the Cannes International Film Festival and the entire action plays out over 24 hours. Igor is a wealthy Russian businessman. His wife Ewa left him two years ago and Igor has never really come to terms with their break up, especially as Ewa is now remarried to a famous fashion designer, Hamid Hussein. The story describes his obsession with his wife Ewa Hussein and how he kills people in cold blood to get her back. Critical analysis The writer explains us the importance of internal satisfaction and points out the emptiness that one feels while maintaining a fake outer appearance.
The writer takes us through the life experiences of people from different fields, but even though they all belong to different professions, they all are suffering from a similar thing that is dissatisfaction in life. But the author describes that even though they have everything they feel empty inside and their life is filled with regret and discontentment. This story tells us the real picture behind the red carpet, crying crowd, diamonds, expensive hotel suits, designer clothes and accessories, limosines, etc.
Igor who has conquered the business world but stills feels that he has nothing in life because his love has left him for another man. If they have a little, they want more. If they have a lot, they want still more. Once they have more, they wish they could be happy with little, but are incapable of making the slightest effort in that direction.
How the old actresses are spending millions of dollars on plastic surgery just so they can get a role or get their fame back and in reality how unhappy they are from inside. The author deeply discusses about vanity and how people are obsessed with themselves and how they are hypnotized by money and power but in reality the superclass who have all that power and money are still unhappy with their life.
The vast majority of society thinks that if they get more money or fame then they will be happy. But Coelho explains that the reality is completely different.
For being truly happy you neither need other people nor materialistic things. It is a state of contentment with what we have.
